DISCERNMENT: Our Inner Voice — Friend or Foe

Is our inner voice original thought, or guided by someone or something else? If you found your way here, you have experienced abuse or trauma in some capacity. Your mind may be battling with you daily, obsessive thoughts try to guide you one way, blocking your desire to go another way. It can encompass self-destructive beliefs, self-destructive behaviors, addiction, fear, chronic nightmares. Your anxious thoughts trigger your, PTSD symptoms. An inner voice that continually judges and condemns, “You are flawed, less than, or of no value to anyone including yourself, unlovable, unforgivable, a phony.” Our inner voice usually consists of our own internal beliefs that have been given to us, the enemies voice of conviction, and the voice of our Creator who is forever calling us to peace and fulfillment.

We have the power with our Creator to dissect and dismantle, and replace this inner voice! Some of the thoughts are those provided when trying to survive the trauma, neglect or abuse. Some of the thoughts come from others who impressed their distorted thinking on us and we internalized it. But beyond this we have an enemy, the shadow of death who has from our birth tried to destroy us. This enemy’s motto is ‘get ’em while their young’ either the abuse and neglect will kill us or we will turn to addictive, self-destructive behaviors in an attempt to quiet the inner voice. The shadow instigates others to abuse us and then turns it on us by an endless, relentless clamoring of accusations and criticisms that we caused it.

We can discover together that these are Lies. We can begin to bravely let the thoughts and body memories surface. Bravely, feel them, acknowledge them and then reckon with them. “Is this coming from me? Do I chose to believe it? What does my Creator say about me?” Finally, armed with truth we can replace the lies with truth. We then begin to be whole. A cleanness enters, a sense of worth and purpose emerges, and we can rest when alone, for the first time!
